R134a Refrigerant
Pure HFC refrigerant for automotive AC, medium-temperature commercial refrigeration and many chiller applications.
About this refrigerant
R134a (1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane, CH₂FCF₃) is a pure hydrofluorocarbon refrigerant. It contains no chlorine, so its ozone depletion potential (ODP) is zero. It became the main long-term replacement for CFC-12 in automotive air conditioning and is still widely used in medium-temperature commercial refrigeration, domestic appliances and positive-pressure centrifugal chillers.
It is colourless, nearly odourless and classified ASHRAE A1 (lower toxicity, no flame propagation under standard test conditions). Typical systems use polyolester (POE) lubricants. R134a has a relatively high global warming potential (GWP 1430, IPCC AR4), so recovery and correct charging practice matter — and many new automotive platforms are moving to lower-GWP options such as R1234yf.
Applications
Automotive air conditioning
Long-standing mobile AC refrigerant for passenger and light commercial vehicles designed for R134a circuits.
Commercial & retail refrigeration
Medium-temperature cabinets, cold rooms and food-service equipment where stable A1 performance is required.
Chillers & heat pumps
Positive-pressure centrifugal and other chillers, plus selected heat-pump designs specified for R134a.
Appliances & transport cooling
Domestic refrigerators/freezers and transport refrigeration units engineered around R134a properties.
