What is R134a? Applications and technical properties

Overview

R134a (1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane) is a single-component HFC that became a mainstream replacement for CFC-12 in many medium-temperature duties. It remains widely specified on chillers, transport and commercial systems designed around its pressure-temperature curve.

As a pure fluid, R134a has a single saturation temperature at a given pressure. That supports straightforward PT-chart diagnostics when systems are charged and operating as designed.

Technical properties

Safety class is typically A1. ODP is zero. GWP is significant on AR4 100-year scales, so policy and OEM roadmaps increasingly favour lower-GWP options for new designs while installed fleets continue to need R134a service stock.

Lubricants vary by application: PAG is common in many automotive loops, while POE or other OEM-specified oils appear in stationary equipment. Always match oil to the machine documentation.

Applications

Automotive air conditioning historically relied heavily on R134a. Medium-temperature commercial refrigeration — display cases, cold rooms above deep-freeze range — and many water or glycol chillers also use R134a designs.

Industrial process cooling sometimes specifies R134a when temperature lift and compressor envelopes fit. The decisive document remains the equipment nameplate and OEM service literature.

Selection for buyers

Start from the labelled refrigerant code. Confirm cylinder size, purity expectations and any CoA needs for the project quality pack. Do not substitute another ACC line because GWP or price looks attractive.

ACC lists R134a with the other four active HFC lines. Request SDS/TDS through the Documents centre when tenders require attached safety and property sheets.

Service context

Charging and recovery belong to trained technicians with gauges, recovery machines and leak detection suited to the system. ACC’s role is product and documentation supply for B2B buyers.

For availability and cylinder logistics, use Contact with R134a code, quantity and site location. Pair with cooling equipment pages when the project also needs condensers or units.
